Judges from South and South East in Bloom have visited Farnham to judge the town’s entries into the Large Town and Town Centre categories.
The judges of the Large Town category were taken on a tour of the area and met up with volunteers including those that have been involved in a project called ‘Bourne Beautification’.
The Town Centre judges started their day at Farnham Town Council where they saw a specially commissioned film that celebrated 25 years of Farnham in Bloom. The video featured interviews with Corporate Sponsor Bob Frost from BBS Ltd, volunteers and school children.
The town centre judging route provided the judges with an opportunity to see examples of how the community has been involved in this year’s Farnham in Bloom. The judging party passed businesses displaying Blooming Art and watched 150 children performing Farnham in Bloom inspired dances at key locations along the route. The judges also saw scarecrows made by local school children, hanging baskets planted and nurtured by schools and young adults from Post 19 and hundreds of planters and baskets sponsored by businesses, individuals and local organisations.
Cllr Stephen Hill, Lead Member for Community Enhancement says: “We were very proud to be able to tell the judges about some of the wonderful community projects that have taken place during this year’s silver anniversary of Farnham in Bloom. The judges also learned how Farnham in Bloom is reaching the wider community through projects such as the Hop Initiative, which saw volunteers growing hops on allotments and in gardens and harvesting them to brew beer.
“The judges seemed thrilled by the dancing and the scarecrows. They were also very impressed by the enthusiasm of the school children at Potters Gate School. I would like to say ‘thank you’ to all the volunteers who work so tirelessly to improve their community.”
The result of the judging will be announced in September. In the meantime, you can see the short film about Farnham in Bloom or get involved in future projects.
