Judging day fast approaches

Flowers planted to spell out Farnham in Bloom 25 years

Final preparations are being made as Farnham gears itself for the arrival of the judges from South and South East in Bloom.

The town centre and surrounding villages have been transformed by the appearance of containers and baskets of colourful flowers. A carpet bed commemorating 25 years of Farnham in Bloom has been planted in the garden at Gostrey Meadow.

On Thursday 9 July, the judges will be taken on a tour of Farnham and the surrounding villages so they can make their assessment of Farnham’s entry into the Large Town category. The day will begin with a presentation that will explain how Farnham in Bloom has evolved and information about this year’s projects. The judges will meet volunteers involved with the Bourne Beautification Scheme before being taken to Farnham Town Council’s greenhouses. At the greenhouses they will meet some of the young adults from Post 19 who have nurtured many of the plants that are now growing in containers around the town.

On Friday, the Town Centre will be judged. During their town centre tour, the judges will see the new three tier planter in Castle Street and have the chance to sample some of the vegetables and salad crops growing in the boxes outside Sainsbury’s.

They will also be shown the verges of Dogflud Way where they will see wildflowers and a number of scarecrows made by children from local schools. As well as providing a lovely splash of colour, the flowers are successfully attracting bees and other pollinators.

Cllr Stephen Hill, Lead Member for Farnham in Bloom says: “The slow start to summer, cold winds and dry weather have presented some challenging growing conditions but the recent warmer weather has given the plants a chance to catch up. The last few days before judging will be spent making sure the town looks as good as it possibly can. I would ask everybody to help us give Farnham the best possible chance in this year’s competition by de-heading any flowers that are past their best, reporting any graffiti or picking up litter.”

He adds: “I would like to thank all our sponsors and the volunteers who have helped with this year’s Farnham in Bloom. Fifteen schools have planted 73 hanging baskets which can be seen in Central car park – they look a picture.”

The result of the judging will be announced in September.
