Work begins to convert chapel

Work has started to convert the former chapel at West Street cemetery into a workshop facility.

The project to change the use of the chapel came about following a public consultation into the future of Farnham’s cemeteries. Specialist contractors who are experienced in dealing with heritage buildings are now restoring parts of the building and converting it into a workshop.

The workshop will be used by a local sculptor who was chosen following Farnham Town Council’s invitation for expressions of interest from local craftspeople and groups who were interested in using the building.

Cllr Carole Cockburn, Lead Member for Cemeteries says: “I am so pleased that this high quality listed building is receiving a new lease of life. As England’s craft town, it is completely appropriate that we support our local artists and craftspeople. West Street cemetery is beautiful and I’m sure our new resident sculptor will find lots of inspiration there for his work.”

The review of the cemeteries also included the chapels at Green Lane and Hale cemeteries. Earlier this year, Green Lane was sold to a private buyer to raise funds for improvements to be made to the other chapels. Talks continue with Hale History Group to find a satisfactory solution for the chapels at Hale.

It is anticipated that work at West Street will be completed during spring 2015.
