Grayshott Folk Club welcomes back: HONEY & THE BEAR https://honeyandthebear.co.uk/ + Friends (Toby Shaer, Archie Churchill-Moss & Evan Carson)
Honey & The Bear + Friends are rapidly establishing themselves as firm favourites with our audience as they have already played for us twice before; in May 2022 and November 2023. British Folk and Roots duo Honey & the Bear combine delicately interweaving vocal harmonies with emotive and evocative song writing. With a diverse range of sounds, textures and rhythms that flow from the fast and furious to gentle ballads, their live performances are spirited and dynamic. Conjuring up stories in song, they tell tales of Suffolk folklore, courageous people they admire, their passion for Nature and the odd heartbreak or two.
The multi-instrumentalist pair, comprised of songwriters Jon Hart (guitar, bass, bouzouki) and Lucy Hart (guitar, ukulele, bass, banjo, mandolin & percussion), have been writing and performing together since early 2014, having met at a song writing event two years previously. Since forming their band, Honey & The Bear have played at many revered venues and festivals across the UK, as well as travelling across the channel for their first European tour. They have supported Sam Kelly and the Lost Boys on two UK tours and opened for The Shires at the world renowned Snape Maltings.
As they are celebrating more than ten years together, this show will feature cherry-picked favourite songs from their back catalogue and for the first time at Grayshott Folk Club tonight, we will be seeing their full, five-piece band. Jon and Lucy will be joined on Stage by Toby Shaer (Whistles, Harmonium, Flute, Fiddle, Bass), Archie Churchill-Moss (Melodeon) and Evan Carson (Percussion, Drums, Bodhran). These friends and musicians play on all three of Honey & The Bear’s albums and all of them have also appeared at Grayshott Folk Club in other bands, at different times because they are highly sought after and very talented young musicians.
In July 2019, Honey & The Bear released their first full studio album called ‘Made In The Aker’. There followed a UK tour in October that year. The album was well received by both their fan base and the critics. In 2020 and with the onset of the pandemic, the duo were grounded and many of their gigs cancelled. However, they were determined that their music should be heard and they used technology to continue playing live music performances in the form of Sunday night Facebook live streams. Jon and Lucy performed thirty-two online shows, throughout 2020 and their fan base grew accordingly.
After challenging themselves to write a new song every week for the first 12 weeks of the live stream, they successfully managed to produce a second album by the Autumn. ‘Journey Through the Roke’ was released on 23rd April 2021.
“Lucy and Jon’s vocals are gentle, rich and mellifluous throughout… This is an accomplished album from a masterly duo”. Nygel Packett, Folk London Magazine
One of the highlights of their music career to date was a sold out concert that Honey & The Bear & Friends put on in the beautiful Snape Maltings. Listen to a live recording of that concert here:
“Dexterously played with beautifully crafted arrangements around a perfect pairing of voices delivering personal fine songs; this is a stunning album.” Marc Higgins – FATEA “This album is one of the clearest recordings I’ve heard in a decade, holding its head above the roke and into the sunlight on every track” Seán Laffey, Irish Music Magazine “Lucy’s vocals are as beautiful as ever…she is now one of this country’s best folk singers” Stephen Foster, Radio Caroline & EADT.
When they last visited Grayshott Folk Club, they had just released their third album, entitled: “Away Beyond The Fret” on 3rd November 2023. They followed this with a UK tour and another sold out show at Snape Maltings.
Tonight we will hear a selection of songs from all three of their albums, as well as audience favourites.
