Farnham in Bloom 2025 is underway with volunteers rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in at Saturday’s (22 March) Community Day at Gostrey Meadow.
Seven community groups hosted stands and kept children occupied with a variety of activities which included a bee safari and the construction of some five-star mini bug hotels!
As well as being entertaining, the activities aimed to introduce children to the wonders of nature and show how everybody has a role to play in enhancing the environment and increasing biodiversity. Other activities included planting seeds for a sunflower competition and studying moths before releasing them on Gostrey Meadow. Farnham’s Craft Town status was reinforced by a competition to design a fairy house with the winning design to be made by the Men in Sheds group at space2grow.
The Mayor of Farnham, Councillor Brodie Mauluka officially launched this year’s Farnham in Bloom and invited everybody to join him in toasting 2025 with a cup of tea and a cup cake. He s thanked everyone for all their efforts and said: “It is great to see so many community groups and volunteers here today getting involved and offering great activities for children and families.”
Farnham in Bloom takes its role in protecting and enhancing the environment very seriously. Practices include increasing biodiversity in green spaces, incorporating wildflowers, supporting wildlife and reducing the need to water with drought tolerant plants.
The Mayor underlined the town’s appreciation of the wonderful army of volunteers and sponsors which include Farnham BID, The Patio Black Spot Removal Company, BBS Ltd, Squire’s Garden Centre, The Bush Hotel and Farnham Institute.”
The Community Day also included conservation tasks. Volunteers planted hazel whips, ripped out old planting in the flowerbeds by the war memorial and collected ten sacks of rubbish in a multi-generational community litter pick.
The community groups that attended the launch and contribute so much to Farnham in Bloom included Badshot Lea Bloomers, space2grow, Hive Helpers, Farnham Community Farm, Farnham Lions and Wrecclesham Conservation Group.
