A piece of art created by Farnham’s first World Craft Town artist in residence has gone on show at The Crafts Study Centre.
‘Things We Can Know’ was made by glass artist Fiona Byrne as a permanent record of her residency earlier this year.
To create the work, Fiona Byrne facilitated a workshop with local makers. She tasked them to fashion tools from everyday objects and use them to make sketches in clay and on paper. Fiona then translated the marks into glass and made a series of forms which reflect Farnham’s cultural heritage. The final piece is an assembly of objects from different stages of the making process including tools, marks and blown glass forms.
Councillor Alan Earwaker, Mayor of Farnham says: “Having had the pleasure of meeting Fiona and following her residency, I am delighted to see the unveiling of her final piece of work. Her interpretation of Farnham’s craft ethos is fascinating, and I like that the collaboration between makers represents community, which is such an important aspect of our town.”
Farnham’s artist in residence initiative has been funded by Farnham South Street Trust and is part of a five-year commitment to host residencies for makers from other World Craft towns and cities.
As England’s first World Craft Town, Farnham is part of a network that promotes crafting through education, fellowship between crafters, and economic development through craft-related activities. Key partners that steer the Farnham World Craft Town programme include Farnham Town Council, Farnham Maltings, University for the Creative Arts, New Ashgate Gallery, the Crafts Study Centre, Farnham Pottery and, Farnham Creatives Network.
‘Things We Can Know’ can be seen in the foyer/shop area of The Crafts Study Centre in Falkner Road until Saturday 15 June. The Centre is open to the public Tuesday – Friday, 10-5pm and on Saturdays 10-4pm.
The piece will next be on show during October Craft Month at the James Hockey Gallery.
