The weekend of carnival fun and community spirit culminated on Sunday (26 June) afternoon with Farnham’s very own Proms and Pop in the Park. The show, which was free to attend and featured music from midday until the early evening, brought families and people of all ages together to continue the excitement of the carnival.
“There was an amazing atmosphere on Sunday as carnival-goers continued to enjoy themselves. We had outstanding music, jubilant dancing and lots more to keep young, old and everyone in between entertained,” says Mayor of Farnham, Councillor Alan Earwaker who opened the ever-popular picnic event. “Gostrey Meadow was a patchwork of picnic blankets and had a relaxed atmosphere which, after a full-on day of carnival on Saturday, lots of us welcomed. We still managed to end the afternoon with everyone dancing, thanks to Fabulous Funky Funks who closed the event for us.”
Proms and Pop in the Park featured sets from five bands who each brought a different flavour to the afternoon. Music ranged from traditional to contemporary with Farnham Brass Band’s performance of instantly recognisable tunes from the world of cinema and Woking Wind Orchestra filling the park with its awe-inspiring orchestral magnificence. A-Train, in contrast, relaxed the crowds with a more laid-back show to chill out to while people tucked into their picnics. Music also came from the joyous and upbeat Shuffle Tunes Choir from Fleet.
“Not only did we have music throughout the afternoon, we also had entertainment from Juggling Jake,” continues the Mayor. “More than a sideshow, his circus skills and tricks delighted the audience every time. I’d like to thank our sponsors Kidd Rapinet Solicitors for supporting our summer 2022 programme, and all our performers for the amazing show. A high point for me was the orchestra’s rendition of Land of Hope and Glory which set off an impromptu swaying and waving of arms across the meadow – such a memorable sight!”
Proms and Pop in the Park, which was organised by Farnham Town Council, followed Saturday’s Farnham Carnival, both of which drew crowds of thousands into the town.
