Doing whatever he can to support the community in reviving Farnham is the commitment made by this year’s Mayor, Councillor Alan Earwaker as he takes on the role for the second year running.

At the civic service on 12 June, Councillor Earwaker formally made his promises of office in the presence of other members of the Council, neighbouring Mayors, representatives from service organisations, charities and Services to Farnham recipients.

Councillor Alan Earwaker says: “It is an immense privilege to be chosen to take on the role of Mayor for a second year. The whole council and staff team work together to be the voice for Farnham and to ensure we can meet the varying needs of all our community. This special service reaffirmed our commitment to do that, working alongside our wonderful volunteers and community organisations.”

This year’s Civic Service was held at St Andrew’s Church with a welcome by the Rector of Farnham, Reverend David Uffindell. As Rev Uffindell invited the Mayor to pledge his promises to Farnham’s community, he also asked the congregation to commit to support and encourage Mayor Earwaker in his work.

Assisted by his daughter, the Mayoress, Claire Earwaker dos Reis, the Mayor will fundraise for Waverley Abbey Trust and Farnham Assist over the coming months. Farnham Assist provides friendship and socialising opportunities for local older people who live alone, are housebound or who are carers. Waverley Abbey Trust looks after Waverley Abbey College, an educational establishment for counsellors and mentors. The Trust is also working with English Heritage to widen access and restore the building to its Georgian glory.

The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Michaela Wickes has also continued her role for a second year and carried out one of the Civic Service readings. Councillor Pat Evans and Councillor David Beaman, joint leaders of Farnham Town Council gave a reading too. 

After the Civic Service, tea and scones were served in the playground at St Andrew’s School.
