Schoolchildren urged to get planting for Farnham in Bloom

Schoolchildren are playing their part in making this year’s Farnham in Bloom an amazing show of flowers and creativity – with more opportunities for schools to get involved still available.

“Farnham in Bloom has lots to offer children’s learning and development, and we have made it really easy for schools to get involved this year,” says Councillor Sally Dickson, Leader Member for Farnham in Bloom.

“Thanks to vital support from principal sponsor, The Patio Black Spot Removal Company Ltd, we have already delivered kits to some schools, providing everything they need to make a gorgeous hanging basket for their school and another that will be placed on display in Central car park later this month. For schools keen to do more, there is still plenty of time to enter one of our competitions: the best school garden category in the Secret Gardens competition, the tallest sunflower or biggest pumpkin competition.”

The contribution of schoolchildren is always a key ingredient of Farnham in Bloom’s entry to the regional and national In Bloom competitions. Not only does gardening link neatly to school activities such as art, science and learning about the natural world, it also lends itself to healthy activity and outdoor learning. Farnham in Bloom encourages schools to get in touch via Farnham Town Council to find out about how to get involved.

As well as hands on gardening, primary school children have also taken part in the Farnham in Bloom butterfly art competition. Schools and pupils could choose any medium they wished – such as painting, collage, sculptures or something else – to create an artwork inspired by butterflies. Winning artwork will be displayed in Farnham town centre.

The range of activities and events organised by Farnham in Bloom means that there is plenty of flexibility to work with schools and other children’s or young people’s groups. Full information is on the Farnham Town Council website.
