October Craft Month begins

Mayor cuts ribbon at entrance to a building

As Farnham’s craft enthusiasts celebrate October Craft Month, the Mayor of Farnham, Councillor Pat Evans, joined in the creative fun by contributing to a community art installation.

The Mayor decorated her own brick for the Another Brick in the Wall project at the launch of October Craft Month and is encouraging Farnham’s residents to participate in some of the many craft activities and events taking place in Farnham this month.

“For October Craft Month we are celebrating Farnham receiving the prestigious accolade of being named a World Craft Town earlier this year, so it is fitting that we have a full programme of craft activities for residents to enjoy. Several, such as our World Craft Town Trail, take place partly or wholly outside, making social distancing easier but there are still plenty of opportunities to get hands-on or to visit artists as they work. Workshops on jewellery making, photography and knitting afternoons are just a few events to join in. The complete programme is on the Craft Town website at www.crafttownengland.org and if you are not sure which craft is for you, why not come to the Art and Design Craft Market in West Street or the Festival of Crafts at the Farnham Maltings,” says the Mayor.

Councillor Evans met several members of the crafting community at the launch, including Keppel Nowson the project co-ordinator for Another Brick in the Wall: “Another Brick in the Wall is a brilliant project that people of all ages and all backgrounds can take part in. It’s an opportunity to leave your mark on the Farnham landscape – just as previous generations of residents have done through our historic craft industries.”

The art installation is being created in the Farnham Herald office in the Lion and Lamb Yard. The Mayor visited the art installation, which continues to evolve as more bricks are added, before receiving her own brick to decorate, together with a set of tools. Once complete, her brick will be added to the work of art with hundreds of others from local residents. Councillor Evans officially opened October Craft Month by cutting a ribbon designed especially for the opening ceremony by Kas Williams while local artist Erin Donahoe sketched the proceedings.

Making Matters, a community of local crafters, is opening a pop-up shop in the Lion and Lamb Yard during October to celebrate Farnham becoming a World Craft Town. Visitors will be able to see works from 20 local artists in what Making Matters hopes will be the first of many joint ventures between the town and its talented artists.

Craft Month is organised by Farnham Town Council and the Farnham Maltings.
