Comment from Farnham Town Council: A bid by Surrey County Council for government funding has been met with mixed feelings. The grant application for £850,000 was made by Surrey for better cycling infrastructure across the county including Farnham. Due to the short window of opportunity to apply for the money, Farnham people have not yet been consulted on the projects which are intended for the town.
Councillor John Neale, Leader of Farnham Town Council says: “I understand Surrey worked to a very tight timescale to submit a bid for funding to improve cycling provision in the county. The inclusion of Farnham in the bid is positive and is to be welcomed. However, the bid has not had the benefit of local input and it is disappointing Farnham Town Council did not see the proposals in advance since they contain several elements we know will not be acceptable to the local community. I have already raised this with Surrey and am assured that the bid outlined is indicative and that there will be plenty of scope to develop the plans with our collaboration, if they are successful in securing the funding. We must remember that this is a major government funding opportunity that will significantly help the provision of better cycling routes in Farnham.”
