A task force of litter pickers has swept across Farnham town centre collecting rubbish for Farnham Town Council’s annual spring clean.

The areas targeted by the volunteers included Gostrey Meadow, Farnham Park, Borelli Walk, Hickley’s Corner, the path from St Andrew’s to Bishop’s Meadow, the town centre and part of the bypass.

The Mayor of Farnham joined in the litter pick and said: “I would like to thank everybody who took part in the spring clean and made this our best supported litter pick to date. Altogether, we managed to remove 40 sacks of rubbish from our streets. The amount of plastic rubbish in our environment is currently a very topical subject and we certainly found a large number of discarded plastic bottles. With more people using reusable cups and bottles, it would be great to think that we may eventually reach the stage where we see a decline in the amount of rubbish that is out there to collect.”

The Spring Clean was attended by residents, Farnham in Bloom volunteers, people who have signed up to be official Bloomin’ Litter pickers, Town Councillors and young people from the Tilford branch of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association.

As well as organising the town centre litter pick, Farnham Town Council loaned litter picking equipment to enable five additional events to take place in the wider community.
