Throughout May, Farnham Town Council’s greenhouses were temporarily transformed into outside classrooms for the annual schools’ hanging basket competition.

Over 100 children from 17 schools and nurseries visited the greenhouses to plant up their hanging baskets. The children took great delight in learning the names of flowers such as orange fizz, million kisses and midnight sun.

Each school group will have one of their baskets displayed in Central car park, while the others will be taken back to school and looked after by the children ready for judging by the Mayor of Farnham in July. All schools will be invited to an awards ceremony in October at Squire’s Garden Centre.

Councillor Stephen Hill, Lead Member for Farnham in Bloom says: “One of the objectives of Farnham in Bloom is to increase community participation and so we are happy that so many schools have once again supported this year’s event.

“It gave us great pleasure to welcome a whole class of children from Potters Gate and to hear how they are going to be spending their summer term learning about plants and growth. We were also glad to hear how students from the Abbey School will be putting their new skills to good use. Following the workshop, they were planning to plant additional baskets to sell as part of their Business Enterprise programme.”

The schools’ hanging baskets will be on display from early June. Farnham in Bloom is sponsored by many local businesses including Corporate sponsor, Specsavers Farnham. In 2017, Farnham is entering South and South East in Bloom and will be representing the south east in the large town category in Britain in Bloom.
