A record number of people braved a day of torrential rain to come along to Farnham Town Council’s greenhouse open day on Wednesday 17 May.
Around 70 people including a group of Brownies visited the greenhouses to see the preparations that are being made for this year’s Farnham in Bloom. Farnham Town Council’s grounds team was on hand to answer questions and to show off some of their favourite flowers such as petunia night sky, which is a deep purple-blue single flower speckled with white spots that resemble stars.
Councillor Mike Hodge, Mayor of Farnham said: “Farnham Town Council’s grounds team has planted almost 20,000 plug plants this year and to see them all in one place really was a spectacular sight.
“I was really pleased that our corporate sponsor Specsavers Farnham, Gold sponsor Wildflower Turf and Silver sponsor Net Technical Solutions were able to come along to the open day and for us to be able to show them a small amount of what goes on behind the scenes for Farnham in Bloom.”
To help achieve their gardening badge, the 1st Farnham Brownies attended in the evening and planted up a hanging basket which will be hung in Central car park. A plaque will be mounted underneath the basket so the Brownies can see their efforts and check on progress throughout the summer. Other hanging baskets in Central car park will be planted up by local schools.
The Farnham in Bloom team is now busy adding the finishing touches to the hundreds of hanging baskets and containers which will make an appearance in and around Farnham Town Council in early June.
