On Monday 13 March, Farnham Town Council will host a ceremony to mark Commonwealth Day.
The annual occasion will see the Mayor of Farnham, Councillor John Ward raise the Commonwealth flag outside the Town Council offices in South Street at 10am.
Councillor John Ward, Mayor of Farnham says: “This year, the theme for Commonwealth Day is ‘A Peace-building Commonwealth’. At a time of increasing instability and uncertainty in the world, the Commonwealth family of nations becomes an ever more-needed source of strength and hope for all its members. We are reflecting on how fortunate we are to have so many people from the Commonwealth living in Farnham or studying at the University for the Creative Arts and local schools.
“As part of the ceremony we will be lighting a candle to remember the contribution of three million men and women from the Commonwealth who volunteered in World War 1 and to commemorate the 1.1 million Commonwealth soldiers who lost their lives.”
The Commonwealth is made up of 53 countries across the world. It is a voluntary association of independent countries that make up nearly 30 per cent of the world’s population. Some of the values promoted by the countries include peace, democracy and respect for human rights.
