Farnham Town Council is offering an opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes at the town’s greenhouses.

The West Street based greenhouses are currently packed full with plants which will soon be planted into the hanging baskets and containers that will be displayed around town for Farnham in Bloom.

Visitors will be able to see the results of a trial which compares the growing of hanging basket plants in both peat-free and reduced peat compost. The In Bloom competition places high importance on environmental responsibility and awards points for entries that actively seek to reduce the use of natural resources such as peat.

Councillor Jeremy Ricketts, Lead Member for Farnham in Bloom says: “The greenhouses are the engine room of Farnham in Bloom and the open morning is a perfect chance for sponsors and supporters of Farnham in Bloom to see what is involved. There are hundreds of plants which have been nurtured and grown on by Farnham’s external workforce and volunteers. It is hard to imagine that all the plants will be used but I know from previous years that a huge number of plants are required to create the displays and fill the hanging baskets and containers that will soon appear in our town and surrounding villages.”

The greenhouses will be open from 10am to 12 noon on Thursday 15 May and can be accessed from West Street allotments.
