Work to improve the paved area around the town centre war memorial in Gostrey Meadow has been completed and includes a new flagpole to be used at ceremonial events in connection with the War Memorial.
The Mayor of Farnham, Cllr Mrs Pat Frost has visited the site to meet the staff of Bourne Valley contractors who carried out the work on behalf of Farnham Town Council.
She said: “Bourne Valley Contractors have done a marvellous job. Over the years, the ground beneath the paving had eroded, which caused the surface to become very uneven. The whole area has now been re-laid and some of the slabs have been replaced. It looks very smart and I would encourage people to take a look when they are next passing. The new flagpole will ensure that the dignity and solemnity of events around the war memorial will be enhanced”.
The war memorial was visited by many people on 1 May when Farnham marked the centenary of the first ever two-minute silence, which was held in memory of those who fell during World War One.
