Farnham Town Council is set to make improvements to the paved area around the town centre war memorial in Gostrey Meadow.

The work will include re-laying the York stone around the memorial and replacing any stone that is damaged or broken. Over the years, erosion beneath the pathway has caused the surface to become uneven and problematic for pedestrians.

While the work is taking place, there will be no access to the area for safety reasons and a pedestrian diversion will be in place along Abbey Street or Union Road. The alternative route will be clearly signposted.

Councillor John Ward, Leader of the Council says: “At various times throughout the year, the war memorial serves as a focal point for commemorative events and acts of remembrance so it needs to be kept in good order and free from trip hazards.

“We have one such occasion coming up on 1 May when Farnham will mark the centenary of the first ever two-minute silence, which was held in memory of those who fell during World War One. The main event will take place in Castle Street and will be followed by a tea party at Gostrey Meadow. I am sure that many people will want to take the opportunity to visit the war memorial so I am pleased that they will be able to appreciate and benefit from the improvements.”
