A wide-range of organisations have taken part in Farnham Town Council’s autumn Big Pick Week.

During the last week of October, councillors from Farnham Town Council and volunteers from Tootsies Nursery, Heath End Gardeners, Hamptons International, the Farnham in Bloom Community Group and Farnham Ramblers organised and took part in litter picks. They litter-picked around the railway station, Central car park, Dogflud Way, Gostrey Meadow and Borelli Walk. Litter picks also took place in Wrecclesham, Badshot Lea, Weydon Hill Road, the Ridgeway, St John’s Road and part of Shortheath Road.

Councillor Stephen Hill, Lead Member for Community Enhancement says: “Thank you to everybody who took part in the autumn Big Pick. I do find it such a shame that a minority of people still find it acceptable to discard their litter for somebody else to pick up. Sack loads of rubbish were collected, including the usual array of crisp packets, coffee cups and plastic bags.”

He adds: “A survey by Keep Britain Tidy found plastic bag litter on more sites than chewing gum or dog mess. Following the recent introduction of a charge for plastic bags, when we hold our spring Big Pick Week it will be interesting to see whether there is a noticeable decline in the number of bags that we find littering the area.”

The spring Big Pick Week will be held in March. Anybody who wishes to hold a litter pick before spring is welcome to borrow litter picking equipment from Farnham Town Council. For more information, contact Lara Prior or call her on 01252 712667.
