Farnham Town Councillors have approved funding of £2,500 for a three-year scholarship programme aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Named in honour of the late Stewart Dakers, a dedicated former employee of Farnham Town Council and youth advocate, the Stewart Dakers’ Bursary will provide local young people with the tools and opportunities to launch their own businesses at the Farnham Children’s Business Fair (CBF).
Each year, the bursary will fund five young entrepreneurs, helping them develop their business ideas and gain real-world experience. The scholarship includes:
- £80 investment in the recipient’s business
- CBF stand fee coverage (worth £30 per event, totalling £90)
- Access to an online video-based learning programme
- 1-2-1 online mentorship check-ins
The CBF hosts one-day marketplaces, where young people (aged 7-17) can set up and run their own businesses, selling products and services in a real-world environment. These fairs have been highly popular, often reaching full capacity.
Farnham Town Council has been a strong supporter of the CBF since 2021, providing in-kind sponsorship by supplying gazebos and other equipment for the events at the Farnham Maltings. To date, the Council has supported eight out of nine fairs, with the Mayor or Deputy Mayor playing an integral role in judging the best business stalls.
Councillor Graham White, Spokesperson for Farnham Town Council says: “The bursary honours Stewart Dakers, who sadly passed away at the end of 2024. Stewart was known for his dedication to the Farnham community, serving as a park ranger, youth worker, and Trustee at 40 Degreez youth centre. Stewart always looked to nurture life skills and create new opportunities for young people. He was also an active participant in the local arts scene.
”Stewart made a lasting impact on many young lives so we are proud to continue his legacy through this bursary, inspiring and empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs.”
This year’s Farnham Children’s Business Fairs are on Saturday 5 July and Saturday 6 December. For more information about the Stewart Dakers’ Bursary and how to apply, please visit https://childrensbusinessfair.co.uk/.
