Music lovers and people wanting to learn more about how they can make a positive difference on the planet flocked to Gostrey Meadow on Sunday for a double bill of entertainment. 

This year, for the first time in its history, the Farnham Sustainability Festival was held in June instead of May. This meant visitors could also enjoy Music in the Meadow which happened alongside the festival. 

‘Recycle, reuse and repair’ was the theme for the 2023 Sustainability Festival, which was jointly organised by Farnham Town Council and Farnham Community Farm. 

In the Talks Tent, inspirational speakers talked about a variety of topics. The programme included talks about bees, the importance of biodiversity, the Farnham Repair Café, Guildford Seedbank and UCA’s sustainability programme.

Councillor Kika Mirlyees, Lead Member for Community says: “Combining Music in the Meadow with the Sustainability Festival was a move that was well-received by the public. The music created an upbeat and energetic atmosphere and when people decided they wanted a change of tempo, they could retreat to the wellbeing area for a relaxing activity.”

The wellbeing area was very popular with people taking part in mini workshops and demonstrations such as Music, Movement and Mindfulness; Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes – five everyday movements to help mobility; an introduction to tapping therapy and tips, tricks and exercises for people working from home. 

As well as entertainment for adults, the organisers ensured there was lots for children to do too. As an introduction to the ‘recycle, reuse and repair’ concept, children took part in sewing workshops and learned how to tie dye. 

Music in the Meadow is back in Farnham on Sunday 18 June, which is also Father’s Day, between 3 and 5pm. Sixties’ cover Band Out of the Shadows will perform live.
