Farnham residents are invited to an extra special jubilee picnic on Sunday 5 June as part of the town’s royal celebrations. Gostrey Meadow will be the venue for Farnham’s Big Jubilee Lunch from 12 to 5pm and all are welcome.
“We have a royal extravaganza of jubilee celebrations to mark the platinum anniversary of Her Majesty’s reign, culminating in our Big Jubilee picnic lunch for as many residents as we can welcome to Gostrey Meadow,” says Councillor Alan Earwaker, Mayor of Farnham.
“Your picnic does not have to be fit for a Queen; just pack some sandwiches, snacks and a blanket and come ready for friendship and fun along with live music to celebrate the past 70 years of the Queen’s reign,” says Councillor Earwaker. Picnickers can expect lively performances from bands and individual artists, plenty of opportunities to sing along plus the very best of food and refreshment stalls.
Councillor Earwaker continues: “If you are old enough to remember the silver jubilee celebrations in 1977, you will know that these rare national events can build lasting memories. More recent anniversaries such as the golden and diamond jubilees in 2002 and 2012 were also wonderful and uplifting events that brought the nation together. Some residents will even remember the coronation itself so however old or young you are, please join us in Gostrey Meadow on 5 June to be part of this national celebration.”
Farnham has been selected to be part of a beacon chain when a beacon at Farnham Castle is lit on 2 June. Her Majesty the Queen became the first British monarch to reach a 70 year reign earlier this year on 6 February. The achievement is being marked by four days of nationwide celebrations over an extended bank holiday from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June.
During the Jubilee weekend there are many street parties being organised as well as more formal events such as those in Rowledge and in Hale. For more details see community websites.
