The audience went bananas at the Mayor of Farnham’s charity concert last week held at the Medici Theatre at Weydon School. The proms-style evening – complete with flag waving, a traditional brass band and a choir – raised in excess of £2,500 for the Mayor’s chosen charity Garner’s Goes Bananas, a project in support of Farnham District Scouts Activity Centre at Garner’s Fields.

Councillor David Attfield, Mayor of Farnham, says: “We had a fantastic evening of very lively music, thanks to our three acts: the Friary Brass Band, Farnham Rock Choir and Farnham Taiko Club.

“Our audience absolutely rose to the occasion with flag waving, swaying, cheering and even joining in with the singing on occasion. I’m grateful to all our performers, our wonderful audience and all of those who worked hard to put on such an excellent show to raise money for this worthy local cause. I’m grateful also to Weydon School for hosting us and to the Farnham Herald for running a competition to win concert tickets.”

Members of the audience included the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Mr Michael More-Molyneux and Mrs Sarah More-Molyneux; the Mayor of Waverley, Cllr Denise Le Gal plus Mayors from Guildford, Godalming, Elmbridge and Reigate and Banstead.

The Mayor chose Garner’s Goes Bananas as his nominated charity for 2018/19 and has held a number of events to raise money for it. Garner’s Goes Bananas is fundraising to extend and upgrade the scouts’ activity centre just outside Farnham which was built in the 1970s and has seen generations of children and young people challenge and develop themselves. The centre is now in need of modernisation. The charity has raised over £130,000 of its £160,000 target.
