Christmas market is a success

The first Christmas market to be organised by Farnham Town Council has been hailed a huge success.

The market took place on Sunday in Castle Street and at the Mercure Bush Hotel. Castle Street was closed to traffic and provided the perfect backdrop for the many festive stalls. Live entertainment was provided by the Farnham Assist Choir and Grandpas Spells Jazz Band.

Hundreds of children visited Father Christmas who could be found in his grotto at the Mercure Bush Hotel. There was also a live nativity scene where families could meet and pet the animals.

Councillor Jill Hargreaves, Lead Member for Tourism and Events says: “The market was an overwhelming success and was greatly enjoyed by the thousands of people who visited. There were some beautiful, quality items for sale many of which were handcrafted.

“The atmosphere was absolutely wonderful and the town was really buzzing with Christmas shoppers. The entertainment was great and I would like to thank John Collins for showcasing his young artistes. It was pleasing to see so many people visiting Farnham on what is traditionally the quietest trading day of the week. The event has given a real pre Christmas boost to our local economy and I would like to thank our sponsors Kidd Rapinet Solicitors, X-mil Security and Trueman and Grundy Estate Agents for helping to make it possible.”

As well as the Christmas market, the monthly Farmers’ Market also took place on Sunday. The market was open for longer than normal and provided shoppers with some delicious food and locally produced items.
